Trailblazing Barrel Racers Marlene Eddleman McRae And Jeana Day Inducted Into ProRodeo Hall Of Fame

The ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs has announced its 2024 inductees, featuring some of the most illustrious names in rodeo history. This year’s class includes a mix of legendary contestants, a celebrated stock contractor, a pioneering bullfighter, and notable committees and animals. Among the honorees are barrel racing veterans Marlene Eddleman McRae and Jeana Day, both recognized for their outstanding contributions to the sport.

Marlene Eddleman McRae

Marlene (Eddleman) McRae has left an indelible mark on the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) both inside and outside the arena. Born in Ordway, Colorado, McRae’s career highlights include qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) ten times (1983-91, 2000) and winning the WPRA World Championship in 1983. She also secured the NFR Average title twice (1983, 1988).

After retiring from competition, McRae continued to impact the rodeo world by serving on the WPRA Board of Directors in 1990 and again in 2016. Her dedication to the sport extended to developing her own line of saddles and tack, introducing innovations like the first carbon fiber saddle tree.

McRae’s influence as a clinician spanned over three decades, during which she taught at more than 500 clinics worldwide. She authored “Barrel Racing 101” and created the Millennial Series video program to share her knowledge with those unable to attend her clinics in person. Her contributions to the sport have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Calgary Pioneer Award in 2018 and her induction into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in 1995.

Jeana Day

Jeana Day, the 1974 WPRA Barrel Racing World Champion, has had a profound impact on the sport of barrel racing. Born in Woodward, Oklahoma, Day’s journey to the top of the rodeo world was filled with determination and grit. She qualified for the NFR six times and was the reserve champion four times before capturing her world title.

Day’s success came aboard Poco Excuse, a small horse with immense heart, whose unexpected achievements inspired the creation of the WPRA’s Horse with the Most Heart Award. Her leadership extended beyond the arena as she served 11 years on the WPRA Board of Directors, playing a crucial role in advocating for equal prize money in barrel racing.

In addition to her rodeo accomplishments, Day earned a math degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and taught high school math until her retirement in 2023. Her contributions to her hometown rodeo and her role as the parade grand marshal for the Woodward Elks Rodeo in 2016 highlight her enduring connection to her community.
