The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo (BPIR) is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and it’s heading back to Texas for a spectacular event on June 15. This milestone coincides with Juneteenth festivities at the iconic Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, making this year’s celebration of “The Greatest Show on Dirt” even more special.
A Legacy of Excellence
Founded in 1984 by entertainment impresario Lu Vason, the BPIR was born out of a vision to entertain and educate audiences about the historical contributions of African American cowboys and cowgirls. Named after the legendary Black cowboy Bill Pickett, the rodeo has grown into a beloved event that inspires and unites communities across America. Since Vason’s passing in 2015, his wife Valeria Howard-Cunningham has carried on his legacy, ensuring that the BPIR continues to bring joy to sell-out crowds and educate attendees about the significant role Black Americans played in the development of the West.
A Grand Return to Cowtown Coliseum
On June 15, the BPIR will host a double-header performance at Cowtown Coliseum, with shows at 1:30 PM and 7:30 PM. This event marks the third of four BPIR events at the venue in 2024, highlighting the rodeo’s enduring popularity. Since partnering with the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) organization in 2019, the BPIR has expanded its reach, benefiting from increased tour dates and broadcast coverage on CBS Television Network.
Celebrating Juneteenth
Adding to the excitement of the Juneteenth celebrations, the BPIR will feature several prominent ambassadors. Emmy Award-winning actor Glynn Turman, known for his roles in “A Raisin in the Sun,” “Cooley High,” and “Queen Sugar,” will be in attendance. He will be joined by actor and producer Reginald T. Dorsey, known for “21 Jump Street” and “South Central.” These stars, embodying Black excellence, will serve as spokespersons and entertainers at the rodeo, adding a touch of Hollywood glamour to the event.
Empowering the Next Generation
The upcoming rodeo also marks the culmination of the first-ever Saddle Up with BPIRF Summer Youth Retreat, held from June 10-15, 2024. This retreat welcomed 36 students from eight states, offering them comprehensive training in agriculture, career opportunities, and essential life skills. Through hands-on activities and classes, these students gained valuable insights into the importance of agriculture and conservation. As a highlight of their experience, they will attend the 1:30 PM show of the BPIR Texas Juneteenth Rodeo.
The 40th anniversary of the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo promises to be an unforgettable celebration, honoring a rich legacy while looking forward to an even brighter future. Join us in Fort Worth on June 15 for a day of thrilling rodeo action, star-studded appearances, and meaningful Juneteenth festivities.
